American Pharoah, Dortmund, Carpe Diem, Mubtaahij, Materiality, and International Star top the list of the Kentucky Derby favorites and contenders for 2015.
The first leg of Thoroughbred Horseracing’s Triple Crown sees American Pharoah at far from a prohibitive favorite at 13-4, followed by Dortmund at 9-2, and Carpet Diem at 5-1.
The odds get much longer as the fourth contender according to offshore and Las Vegas oddsmakers has Mubtaahij at 10-1, Materiality at 12-1, and both International Star and Upstart at 14-1. It should be a competitive field with Frosted as the eighth best contender, but far from a big long shot at 16-1, followed by Firing Line at 18-1.
“It’s as wide open of a field as I’ve seen in some time,” said Bob Warner of Lines-Maker.com adding, “There is no clear-cut favorite.”
Likewise posted are odds to win the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes) has American Pharoah at 10-1, Dortmund at 12-1, and Carpe Diem at 14-1. Will any horse win the Triple Crown is 8-1. “No” at 10-1 would seem to be a gift to chalk lovers considering it has not been done since Affirmed in 1978 and only three times since 1948.
Some of the more intriguing propositions are will Secretariat’s record-shattering time of 1:59.40 in 1973 be broken. “Yes” is a whopping 10-1 with no at 1-14, perhaps as much value as a miniscule payout can have.
